Are there any Vegetarians in Third World Countries?
Q. I seem to notice a trend of people who are Vegetarians happen to be in First World Countries where there is an abundant supply of food thus the choices. I was wondering are there also Vegetarians in Somalia, Malawi, Yemen, Congo, Tanzania, Comoros, Burundi and many others. I am just curious because being a vegetarian is a choice, and if I am not mistaken I'm sure those people in Third World Countries would like to have a mouthfull of what we have here.

A. In the African countries you mentioned, it is not a matter of choice, most people are vegetarian because meat is too expensive. Live animals are a status symbol, the more you have the more status, therefore large animals like cattle are only killed on special occasions. The majority of people live on crushed corn, pulses, fruit and vegetables. If meat is to be consumed, then it is more likely to be chicken or fish. Myself, I'm not fond of the prosessed food the people in First World countries seem to crave.
