What are some good academic summer camps for a student entering high school?
Q. I am looking for a summer camp that focuses on academics. I want it to be residential, co-ed, and it has to be for students entering high school. I also want some science/mathematics courses available. Thanks.

A. I would recommend looking at colleges and universities for academic teen camps. Westminster College in Salt Lake City offers co-ed academic camps for students entering 9th-12th grade. Students stay in the dorms, and can study aviation, robotics, finance, writing or environmental biology and science. This is a college-prep camp so you get a taste of college life before leaving high schools.

Anyone know of a good academic summer program for high schoolers?
Q. Does anyone know of a good academic program I could apply to? I like history and political science and I love to write. I am a straight A student. Before you say that I should have applied earlier, I applied to two governor's school's which were closed because of a shortage of funding and won a scholarship to a Spanish immersion camp which was closed due to lack of enrollment. Help please. Any ideas, camp or not, would be appreciated.

A. Over the summer I went to this program called CTD (Center of Talent Development) at Northwestern University. It costs a bit of money...but seriously, it's soo much fun. What happens is you take an honors/adv/AP class in just THREE weeks. It's summer school...but so much more fun. You meet new people and they legit become your best friends. I still talk to my friends to this day and I actually just went to Disneyland with one! You also get weekends and stuff to go to the beach, Six Flags, etc. And it gives you a great look around Northwestern and what college living is like. I really loved it and I took AP European History over there. And it's really intense and I just took the AP test for it today, yet I still remember everything! It was… [cont.]

Is It Wise to Move to California for a Summer Academic Internship?
Q. I would be paying for the apartment out of pocket. I'm confident that the experience would be good. However, I'm not sure if it's a smart move. Do other people spend money for academic internships?
Asked by HAPPINESS IS A LIE - Sat Jan 9 21:09:43 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The norm is that you are not paid when you do an internship, and all your expenses are your own. That's normal. So your having to pay for your own apartment is totally normal. You may actually be able to save money by either subletting an apartment from a student from a local university, or finding a summer roommate situation, or even staying in a university dorm for the summer. I did that when I did my internship in Boston - I used the local newspaper to find a sublet, and that saved me huge cash, as well as making it easy to find a short term, summer-only apartment.

Duke TIP or Asheville Summer Academic Adventures Program?
Q. I have to choose between a Duke TIP Center for Summer Studies Summer Camp or an Asheville Summer Academic Adventures Program. I qualify for both. Please help me choose! Here are both of the websites:
Asked by Sarah H - Sun Oct 5 20:33:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've had a few friends do the program in Asheville and they LOVED it. I think the Duke program might be a bit more prestigious, but I'm not sure if it'd be a fun way to spend your summer. If I was you, I'd go with the one in Asheville... There's no better place I can imagine to spend a part of your summer. Good luck with choosing!

Q. I am a sophmore in high school. I would not like to spend over 1000 dollars, and would like the camp to be around 7-10 days. A. contact the school counselor or special education coordinator for the school that your nephew attends. if for some crazy reason they dont have any suggestions, you can also contact the special education department of the local school board. they are the ones that regulate such programs. good luck!

Can Summer classes make up for credit deficiency during the year for academic progress?
Q. For example I need to complete 24 credits during the year but I completed 22 so I will complete 3 more credits in the Summer.
Asked by WildCat - Sat Feb 20 17:08:35 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. WildCat: Yes. Summer is part of the academic year, so credits earned during the summer are just as valid as credits earned in the Fall and Spring. That being said, if you are placed on financial aid - or academic probation - the part-time schedule that is typical of summer registration may not be sufficient to resolve your deficiency. In that same light, once placed on financial aid probation, your school won't be able to authorize summer aid just because you're working to remedy those deficiencies. But, yes. If you need to complete 24 credits in an academic year to stay on track for timely completion of your degree program, summer credits count just fine. Good luck!

What are some good medical or general academic summer camps?
Q. Hi. I'm looking for a couple of good summer camps to go to this summer. I love academics (I don't know why, I just do). So I was looking for a medical summer camp or even a general academic or any camps like that. I'm also not very good at studying because it usually comes easy to me but now I'm finding that it is getting harder so if you know any good studying or high school preparation camps that would be awesome!! I would like residential camps only please. Thank you in advance!! Oh and just in case it comes in handy, I want to be a neonatal nurse, a pediatrician, or a forensic scientist!!

A. i don't think it really matters if you're in a applied or academic french course, you just need the credit. if your panning to take french all four years then maybe you should just switch to academic french in grade 10 and continue on from there. or if your non-semester like my school you can ask your guidance to change your class but it might be too late and your whole schedule might change. not know about semester schools. i am in grade 9 taking academic french.

How important are summer/holiday activities on your college application?
Q. And what ones are the most important/impressing? Are college credit courses worth it? Are internships/jobs really better than summer academic programs/'camps'?
Asked by Beeg - Mon Nov 16 13:49:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Having an internship or a job that's related to the program that you want to apply to is gold. Nothing says awesome student like already having direct experience with your major. If, by college credit courses, you're talking about AP classes, then YES. They are cheap college credit that may or may not apply to your major. They can also help waive a general education class requirement if you're lucky.

A. I am assuming that you are a high school student. Some boarding schools like Philips Exeter, Philips Andover and Choate Rosemary Hall have academic summer programs and offer some limited financial aid. To find more programs, go to www.petersons.com and look for the summer camp section. You can search for academic camps. Another good source is www.collegeconfidential.c om and then go to their discussion boards. Under that look for the Pre-college issues and go to the Summer Programs discussion forum. Good luck!
