I took the comps a few years ago in my program (physics) and they consisted of 5 hours of tests per day over 3 days testing 4 major subject areas I had taken undergrad and graduate courses on - problems designed to make you not only demonstrate what you remember from the courses but to take it to the next level on most of the questions by interpreting the results in specific situations or show how they relate to other subfields.
