From Google News Search: "Expressive Therapies" A follow-up question for my son's special education diagnosis . . .? Q. The school system seems to think my son has Asperger's - private doctors do not agree. We have sought outside treatment and are aggressively treating his expressive speech delay (3x a week) and have enrolled him in social integration therapy (2X a week). However, to receive school services the school administrator has told us that they are not required to consider other diagnosis outside what the school determines . . . in fact, they will not place the outside diagnosis within his school file. It will be as if the other opinions never happened. Why is this? My son is not yet in public school but will be in about fourteen months so we are trying to stream line our private therapy to make sure he is ready for public education. The first thing to understand is that no school is required to take the testing or diagnosis from a private practioner or therapist as the primary finding in putting a child on an IEP. For a child to have an IEP through the public school, the school must be allowed to test the child and/or reveiw any medical files to support recommendations based on physical based disabilities. This is part of the federal laws governing IEP's. Once testing by the school is completed, parents have the right to request testing done by non-school personel, paid for by the school. The school will provide you with a list of people you may contact to perform this second set of testing...in most cases you can not… [cont.] Answered by Annie - Tue Jul 31 13:34:10 2007 speech delay question? Q. My 5 y.o. has been in speech therapy since she was 2. She's got expressive speech delay and articulation problems, her level is about 3 yrs old at this point. I'm just wondering when she'll be able to catch up. It breaks my heart to see other kids way younger than her speaking well. She can understand everything you say to her. She's in a speech program five days a week, 3 hours at a time, we're doing all we can. Anyone have any idea at what point most speech delayed kids grow out of it? Asked by busy_bee - Sun Aug 30 16:48:06 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. My daughter was also called a "speech delay". Only in her case, it proved to be speech dyspraxia---a form of articulation issue that doesn't respond to the usual methods. Her speech therapist had never heard of it, so for five painful years, she kept insisting my daughter was no "trying" hard enough. Today, her speech is still different...but she can articulate well enough to be understood if she is careful to speak more slowly. To answer your question, there is no "typical" age for speech delays to right themselves, but the wrong therapy can make matters worse, not better. Good luck. Q. When asked in an interview what would you do with a new referral, who would you collaborate with, what else would you take into account (e.g. nursery aged child, with some expressive and comprehension difficulties) what sort of answer is being looked for? Thankyou Asked by sase8686 - Sun Aug 16 09:12:26 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. That you don't come accross as knowing everyting - that you know to ask what has worked and what has not worked that you understand that even though you are providing speech services - there is a TEAM working with the child. They may want you to differentiate between a new referral - early years - vs a new referral that is school age. 'follow the school policies and procedures' is typically a good phrase to use.
