The concept of personhood (who is a person within a society) is the fundamental component of any selective concept of people. A distinction is maintained in philosophy and law between the notions "human being", or "man", and "person". The former refers to the species, while the latter refers to a rational agent (see, for example, John Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding II 27 and Immanuel Kant's Introduction to the Metaphysic of Morals). Central issues of interest to people are the understanding of the human condition and the meaning of life, and survival. Religion, philosophy, and science show or represent modes and aspects of inquiry which attempt to investigate and understand the nature, behavior, and purpose of people. Sociology, economics, and politics represent modes by which people investigate how to maximize a collective survival strategy.

Islam recognizes the People of the Book as members of monotheistic faiths founded upon revelation related to its own faith. By contrast, in Judaism, the Jews are often said to be the chosen people, a concept modified by the Christian doctrine of the Elect.

Why are there evil people in the world? What causes people to commit evil crimes?
Q. I am writing a journalism piece for my high school newspaper and want to see what people around the world think of criminals who kill for no reason, people who rape for no reason, and people who abuse their children for no reason. What causes these people to hurt others?

A. Well.. each one differs from the other, who doesn't agree at this?! No one. But what makes them different, as in good and bad? This is what you're probably looking at for your journal, except you're referencing to 'evil in human'. Philosophy and Theology once had a debate about the cause of evil in the world like hypothesizing whether it s a metaphysical nature (which competes with goodness) or because of the free will of humankind; simply free will vs. determinism. Many religious beliefs also state that it s because of a devil and his fault; uhh.. Hellooo, is it God s fault then for creating the devil?! All these kinds of debates are boundless, and are based on opinions, like that s what philosophy is, ri? But think about this … [cont.]

What causes people to become an atheist?
Q. I don't believe in religion or any God's. I just wonder if people question their religious belief's due to suffering some sort of trauma. I suffered from childhood trauma. Was raised Catholic, but didn't start thinking about things till my early 20's. I then realized that religion is pretty much a means of keeping people in line and for making money. If you were never told about Christianity, science would make more sense. People believe in God, just because they've been told about it their whole lives. I think it takes a smart person without fear to question authority and religious leaders.

Why are people getting upset over the recent flight cancellation?
Q. I know that people want to get home or attend important meetings, but aren't the cancellations happening because of safety concerns? I would rather miss an important meeting than fly on an unsafe flight. I would choose a short delay of seeing my family than than not see them ever again because of something terrible happening while I flew on a plane that wasn't checked for safety. Wouldn't you? If you read the news or see interviews, you'll know that people are getting agitated and angry about the cancellations, but don't you think they should be happy that airline companies actually care about them getting to their destination safely? Are people that stupid?
Asked by Disco - Thu Apr 10 16:01:09 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, junior, the airlines and the FAA inspectors are. People are upset because these inspections should have been completed during the normal course of performing maintenance which is scheduled to eliminate cancelled flights. People are upset that the airlies: A) Didn't perform routine inspections and corrections properly B) They have paid money in advance and have now had all sorts of plans cancelled because the airline screwed up so, the airlines at some point DIDN'T care, that's why the fleet is now grounded, because they tried to get away with something that cleary, as you can see wasn't allowed. Get it now?

  • A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.
  • Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.

  • I judge people by what they might be,—not are, nor will be.
  • The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on.
