Criticism is the judgement of the merits and faults of the work or actions of one individual by another (the critic). To criticise does not necessarily imply to find fault, but the word is often taken to mean the simple expression of prejudice or disapproval.

The psychology of criticism

Criticism and narcissists

Vulnerability with their own self-esteem makes individuals with narcissistic personality disorder very sensitive to criticism or defeat. Although they may not show it outwardly, criticism may haunt them and leave them feeling humiliated, degraded, hollow, and empty. They may react with disdain, narcissistic rage, or defiant narcissistic personality disorder.

Narcissists are extremely sensitive to personal criticism and extremely critical of other people. They think they must be seen as perfect or superior or infallible or else they are worthless. There's no middle ground.

The narcissist is constantly on the lookout for slights. He is hypervigilant. He perceives every disagreement as criticism and every critical remark as complete and humiliating rejection: nothing short of a threat.

Criticism and paranoids

Individuals with paranoid personality disorder are often rigid, critical of others, although they have great difficulty accepting criticism themselves.

Is religious criticism and intolerance the same as racism?
Q. At the recent UN anti-racism conference, the US and other countries were boycotting it because of the anti-Israel content, and the attempts by some Islamic countries, still angry after the danish cartoons, to equate criticism of religious faith to a violation of human rights. Is this right? I think in the 21st century we are a becoming more and more questioning, pragmatic and scientific, and religion just does not stand up to any of this.

A. Most of the times, it's pure and simple "ignorance".

What was the popular criticism of Truman and his attempted policies?
Q. What was the popular criticism of Truman and his attempted policies? What are some of the ways in which this anti-communist hysteria showed itself in American society? If any of the events described on this page occurred today, do you think today's society and government would act the same way? Explain your answer. How did Senator Joseph McCarthy gain national fame in 1950? Was his claim about his 'list' legitimate? Explain. Describe McCarthy's anti-communist crusade in your own words. What role did television (which was a relatively new phenomenon) play in McCarthy's eventual demise? What happened to the American economy in the post-World War II period? Give specific examples. What were some of the population trends at this… [cont.]

A. The Truman Show offers a grand metaphor for contemporary American culture. Its message is that we are immersed in a media landscape of lifelike fantasies that serves the interests of those in power. If we want to be free and have a chance at an authentic life, it tells us, we will have to distance ourselves from the safety and comforts of our media-saturated culture, and be willing to live in the world as it is. What many critics don't fully appreciate is that The Truman Show is only the latest in a series of books, movies and television productions that have conveyed this message. Most of these works have the same plot, with variations in character and settings and slight alterations in their basic elements.

Is there anywhere I can go for proofreading/constructive criticism on some fiction I have written?
Q. I am looking to publish a book of around 10-12 short stories, but I would like some feedback on my writing. It has adult content so needs to be read by a mature audience of over 18s, but I would love some constructive criticism or at the very least someone to proofread my work. Anyone know of anybody/anywhere?

A. Well... there is always online. Some of the sites I'm on are: fanfiction.com fictionpress.com deviantart.com The thing is that if you aren't very good... you probably won't get much critism. But I could probably help you with feedback and proofreading. Even though I'm not quite 18, my mind is very mature... and I am also writing a mature short story collection of my own ><

Criticism is the activity of judgement or informed interpretation. In literary and academic contexts, the term most frequently refers to literary criticism, art criticism, or other such fields, and to scholars' attempts to understand the aesthetic object in depth.
