China is seen variously as an ancient civilization extending over a large area in East Asia, a nation and/or a multinational entity.

China is one of the world's oldest civilizations and is regarded as the oldest continuous civilization. Prior to the 19th century, it possessed one of the most advanced societies and economies in the world; but through successive dynasties it then missed the industrial revolution and began to decline. In the 19th and 20th century, imperialism, internal weakness and civil wars damaged the country and its economy, and led to the overthrow of imperial rule.

In 1949, after major combat ended in the Chinese Civil War, two states calling themselves "China" emerged:

In the 1950s, change to economic policies in Taiwan transformed the island into a technology-oriented industrialized developed economy after a period of high growth rates and rapid industrialization. In mainland China, in the 1970s, reforms known as the Four Modernizations modernized the agriculture, industry, technology and defense, vastly raising living standards, and making the PRC one of the great powers.

Historically, China's cultural sphere has extended across East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing systems being adopted to varying degrees by neighbors such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Through its history, China was the source of many major inventions. It has also one of the world's oldest written language systems. The first evidence of human presence in the region was found at the Zhoukoudian cave. It is one of the earliest known specimens of Homo erectus, now commonly known as the Peking Man, estimated to have lived from 300,000 to 780,000 years ago.

How can China contribute to population growth with their one child policy?
Q. In the wikipedia article on overpopulation it says that China is one of the nine countries that are expected to account for half of the world's projected population increase by 2050. How is this possible with the one child policy? Wouldn't the amount of deaths be greater than the amount of births? If the answer is that their living longer show it mathematically, because it still doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't they have to be living like 20 years longer to get to the point where an extra generation is born before one dies?

A. The words, "One Child Policy" is a carefully defined policy . Like all policies there are the words and there is the practice and then the effects. The policy is implemented throughout China, but in different ways. China practices legal discrimination based on the location of the citizen. Those billion people that reside in the rural main land cannot have this policy enforced upon them easily. So in practice many famers have more children and shuffle them around if any enforcement is seen as coming there way. In the cities it is different because enforcement is much easier, hence it limits city dwellers from having more children. The net effect is some but not much slowing of the population growth in the area where the farmers live, and… [cont.]

I live in China and I would love to make peanut butter bars, but I need a simple recipe-any suggestions?
Q. I love to make PB bars with milk chocolate melted on top-they're usually a favorite for friends and family. However, I'm super limited on my baking supplies here in China. I have PB and can "make do" with a few other items, but I need a super simple recipe. All great suggestions and they sound delicious, but I cannot find Rice Krispies, Special K or equivalents-cereal is pretty limited.

China is a cultural region and ancient civilization in East Asia. China refers to a one of the world's oldest civilization comprising successive states and cultures dating back more than 6,000 years. Due to the stalemate of the last Chinese Civil War following World War II, China currently looks like two separate countries: the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Republic of China (ROC). The PRC administers and governs mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, while the ROC administers and governs Taiwan and its surrounding islands. Each government used to claim that it was the only official government of China. However, PRC is nowadays widely accepted in the world as the only offical government.
