With the advent of neuroimaging techniques, location of space-occupying lesions can now be accurately determined so the focus has now moved onto the measurement of cognition and behaviour, including examining the effects of any brain injury or neuropathological process that a person may have experienced. A core part of neuropsychological assessment is the administration of neuropsychological tests for the formal assessment of cognitive functioning. Aspects of cognitive functioning that are assessed typically include orientation, new-learning/memory, intelligence, language, visuoperception, and executive-functioning. However, clinical neuropsychological assessment is more than this and also focuses on a person's psychological, personal, interpersonal and wider contextual circumstances. Assessment may be carried for a variety of reasons, such as:
Miller outlined three broad goals of neuropsychological assessment. Firstly, diagnosis, to determine the nature of the underlying problem. Secondly, to understand the nature of any brain injury or resulting cognitive problem (see neurocognitive deficit) and its impact on the individual, as a means of devising a rehabilitation programme or offering advice as to an individual's ability to carry out a certain tasks (for example, fitness to drive, or returning to work). And lastly, assessments may be undertaken to measure change in functioning over time, such as to determine the consequences of a surgical procedure or the impact of a rehabilitation programme over time. Asked by gsmom - Thu Mar 5 08:42:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. My son was diagnosed with PDD at the end of January. I took him to the "Autism Center of Pittsburgh" and he was diagnosed by a licensed psychologist with a graduate certificate in Behavioral Analysis in Special Education. He also has an appointment for a more in-depth evaluation in April at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Behavioral Clinic. We'll see what they say. Never hurts to have a second opinion. They recommended speech therapy, wraparound services and a DART preschool. Right now I'm in the process of getting everything filled out. I had his Social Security appointment yesterday and I have to send in his application for Medical Assistance (regular insurances don't pay for autism services). Q. If a patient shows symptoms of anterograde amnesia which neuropsychological assessments and imaging techniques would be recommended in order to confirm or dis-confirm whether a patient is diagnosed? Asked by matthewwalford - Fri May 8 04:53:54 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Anterograde amnesia, also known as fixation amnesia, is the inability to remember or recognize new information or new events that occurred after the amnesia s onset. Retrograde amnesia, also known as evocation amnesia, is the inability to remember or recognize information or events that occurred prior to onset. The Hanoi Towers Problem is one of the tests used to assess a patient cognitive abilities after the operation that caused his/her amnesia. Contrary to the image that many people have of memory as a vast collection of archived data, most of our memories are actually reconstructions. They are not stored in our brains like books on library shelves. Whenever we want to remember something, we have to reconstruct it from elements… [cont.] Answered by canada_winnipeg_man - Sun May 10 19:54:34 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Neuropsychological assessment" Cognitive functioning in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and affective ...
