A. The UN has said that the worse humanitarian crisis is in Somalia right now. Congo and Sudan are also in rather dire straits. See the UNDP Human Development Report, available for free online in various places, for country rankings regarding literacy, nutrition, AIDS, etc.

How would a healthy and independent Africa benefit the world?
Q. Africa has been sought after for many different reasons in the past. How would a healthy and independent Africa benefit the world?
Asked by Adam R - Wed May 21 13:48:45 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. we could save our billions of aid dollars if their governments wasn't so corrupt. then we would not have to worry about feeding their poor starving children that they reproduce so numerously and cannot or will not care for them. also, if they would end slavery and free their innocents and recognize women's rights and quit making them breeding animals with no say over anything. then they and the whole world would benefit. they could share in their own wealth.

What parts of Africa did the various slave traders collect slaves from?
Q. I have heard that there were certain parts of Africa that remained untouched by the slave trade. I know that in many cases it was Africans themselves who sold other Africans to the white slave traders. I believe that there were no slaves taken from Kenya.
Asked by Tyson&Chino - Sun May 3 16:34:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. European slave traders got all their slaves from west Africa because it was the closest place to the end users in the new world. Freight costs were very high. Also allot of the slaves died on the way across the Atlantic. Taking them from East Africa was just not practical. Arab slave traders did collect slaves in East Africa.

Q. Guns, Germs, and Steel Episode 3:power of germs How has the colonization of Africa created countries riddled with disease?
Asked by rodkihgf - Mon Sep 22 22:55:19 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Blaming it on colonization ignores the fact that diseases have always existed. I don't recall Diamond blaming disease on colonization. If he did, he would greatly reduce his credibility. Where he did mention it, it was about the white people not being able to take tropical diseases. The disease problem in Africa doesn't involve whites or colonists.

How is Africa trying to stop the Somalian Pirates?
Q. Whats with only NATO stopping the pirates. I have done major reasearch on the current event on pirates and have not found any articles about Africa helping. If anyone finds any articles about Africa helping or not helping enough please leave the articles web address.
Asked by heinodj - Mon Apr 20 19:18:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Kenya is providing the venue for prosecuting the pirates. Looking at a map of Somalia, the country is practically all coastline. There aren't really any African nations near it. Kenya and Eritrea, but their navies are quite small, mostly consisting of patrol boats. Ethiopia has no coast. Djibouti has its own issues, but provides bases for the US and other countries. That's pretty much it. The European countries and the US have economic interests, such as owning the tankers and ships sailing though the area.

A. In Roman Catholicism, a nun is a female monastic who has taken solemn vows (the male equivalent is a "monk"). Nuns are cloistered to the degree established by the rule of the religious institution they enter. In the Roman Catholic tradition, there are a number of different orders of nuns each with its own charism or special character. In general, when a woman enters a convent she first undergoes an initial period of testing the life, known as postulancy, for a period of six months to a year. If she, and the order, determine that she may have a vocation to the life, she receives the habit of the order (usually with some modification to distinguish her from professed nuns) and undertakes the novitiate, a period (that lasts one to two years) [cont.]

A. Political questions are always so sensitive and I will answer as diplomatically as I can. I don't think people without any first hand experience, or those who are extremely negative should add much input to this question. I am a proudly South African woman, of mixed race. People of mixed race can also say that they have it tough, being in between black and white. They, too, say they are discriminated against, worse than any white, or black person. You then get the large Indian population, who will also claim the same.People, no matter who/what they are, tend to sometimes wear discrimination / crime / apartheid/ colour / political problems/ history, like a badge and use it, when convenient, as an excuse for their own hardships and… [cont.]

A. Organizations that don't charge fees for volunteering, such as VSO Canada, UN Volunteers and the PeaceCorps are looking for people who can work (read, write and speak) in a language other than English, who have skills and experience that can lead to local people generating income, better feeding their families, improving children's health, etc., or that can lead to the transformation of key institutions, such as government, universities/schools or NGOs. Old musical instruments wanted for disadvantaged youngsters in South Africa?
Q. Here on the southern coast of South Africa we're trying to start a naval cadet corps to train disadvantaged youngsters of colour as prospective seamen. A cadet band is planned which will not only form part of the programme, but will also perform during public marches and at various functions. This will hugely assist the fund raising effort. 5 Trumpets, 15 bugles, 5 side drums, 2 tenor drums and a bass drum are required. Does anyone know where I could find willing donors?

How did the French imperialism of North and West Africa affect both areas?
Q. I am doing a project on French imperialism in North and West Africa and we need to know things about France such as: reasons for desire to control the area, method of establishing control, advantages/disadvantages that resulted from this take over, and the overall outcome in relation to France. Also, we need information about the conquered areas such as: changes that were made and benefits (or lack of) received. I am having some trouble finding information so any help would be great. A good website would even help.

A. Alexis B is quite wrong. French imperialism affected North and West Africa in many ways. (and not because my mom told them to either, quite frankly she wasn't alive then) Mainly though, there was a poor outcome so any good that might have happened, was eventually reversed by the African territories declaring their freedom.
