How should I go about getting academic journals published?
Q. Completed a Social Work degree and interested in publishing some pieces of research I did along the way... Also looking to continue research in a variety of fields and I know it's very important to keep getting citations to advance an academic career. Can anyone offer any tips on getting academic journals to publish my articles, particularly in the field of Social Policy / Social Work?

A. You need to go to the reference part of the library or social sciences part of a university library. Read the magazines there on various topics associated with your subject. The magazines themselves, usually state whether they accept unsolicited work- i.e that without an agent. This is where you will find the specialist academic journals too. Get some ideas from the writers and artists yearbook about submitting articles. Any bookseller will get it for you. Also, if you could do an ma or phd on your subject, then getting in the publishing world is easier as your thesis at that level, will itself be considered a publication of sorts, as they tend to print and bind them and put them in the uni library. Use the internet for research, submit… [cont.]

WHere can I find academic journals about the history of illegal immigration?
Q. Pretty much statistics from the past. In the 1950s or 1920s or whenever before 2000s. I just want academic journals and like where they talk about motives and reasons. Ones after 2000s are easier to find but I need a buildup to the current wave of illegal immigration, so I need to find statistics of illegal immigration from the past.

Academic journals on the nature vs nurture debate in regards to obesity?
Q. I'm writing a position paper on the nature and nurture debate in regards to OBESITY. The academic journals need to be: -Reputable -CURRENT (2000 is the oldest date i can use) -cannot be from a "specialist-organization" like the heart and stroke foundation This is actually for a high school position paper. :) My high school has databases like EBSCO, but they are of no help. I've tried using them, but cannot find anything on it.

A. Doesn't your college library or med school have an index to journal articles? I can't remember what it's called, but I remember using one when I was a student. Google Scholar showed these results when I searched on "obesity nature vs nurture" - hope it helps.

how common is it to see the "f-word" or other explitives in academic journals?
Q. I read a lot of social science, cultural studies-type journals, and from time to time I see the f-word used (almost always in quotation marks as said by someone else, and not in the author's own words). Is this common? Are there any rules about printing explitives in academic journals?
Asked by worldpeace - Wed Nov 29 23:13:38 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I see them often in the Academic Journals I read for school. The majority of the time the F-word is used during an interview or a quote from someone, usually in studies dealing with Urban areas and youth. I have read one in which the author was the one doing the majority of the swearing but he was talking to urban youth and using the vernacular that they them self use.

Are periodicals considered academic journals?
Q. I have this research project i need to do for a world history class, and for the project we have to use like legit sources for our research (such as academic journals). the site we're supposed to be using has all the categories listed and when i searched for things i checked only the academic journals category. i keep getting periodicals on my search results too, and the periodicals are more informative but i don't know if i can use them as research for my project. basically i'm asking if a periodical is considered a real research source. on the site, it lists what kind of writing it is. most of my search results come up as Academic Journal Language. and some are Periodical Language. so i just want to know if they're the same thing or not… [cont.]

Where can I find access to free online academic journals?
Q. Paper requires information on Israeli education. May want to explore how Israeli and Palestinian conflict affects education.
Asked by TRN - Sun Feb 10 22:11:33 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you are at a University your university library probably grants you access to databases like Jstor.org and ERIC. Check there. If you do not have access through a university library it is generally much more difficult, but some public libraries may have limited access. If you know the name of the journal you want, you can also try searching for the journal itself and you may be able to see certain articles.

Academic journals: What's the difference between a "peer-edited" and a "peer-reviewed" journal?
Q. Hi there, Does publications in a "peer-edited" journal make you entitled to a scholarship for a PhD program? Or only publications in refereed journals count? Thanking you in advance.
Asked by Anna - Thu Apr 12 21:44:31 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There is no publication that "entitles" any student to a scholarship, fellowship, or assistantship, or even admission to a PhD program. However, publications can help a student to present themselves as a strong candidate for both admissions and awards. Peer-edited journals have a board of scholars that act as editors, and select articles for publication. Peer-reviewed (or "refereed") journals regularly send out all articles they receive to other scholars for review, soliciting their editorial opinions as to whether the article should be accepted for publication, revised and then resubmitted, or rejected. It is much better to have an article in a peer-reviewed journal, but it is good to have any publication.

A. If you are an undergraduate student your papers are probably not eligible on their own. Usually you have to assist a professor with their research and you get a listing as an 'author' (way at the end of the line - it goes: principle researcher, other Phds, graduate students that assisted, undergrads that assisted). If you are a graduate student, I am surprised you do not know this information. In this case you assist a professor with their research and get a listing on it. You also conduct your own research and your advisor gets a credit on your paper. Either way it must be submitted, farmed out for peer-review, and then accepted by the publication. Some of the best journals are: American Anthropologist American Journal of… [cont.]

Academic Journals dealing with spirituality?
Q. I need to include 3 academic journals for my research paper and I was wondering if anyone knew of any that dealt with people questioning their spirituality? Or perhaps any dealing with ancient Egypt and its first attempt at monotheism? Author: Michael C. Rea In sum: the author contends that Christianity is similar to Amun-Ru theology of the New Kingdom period in Egypt. Essentially, the idea of the Trinity (father, son, holy ghost) is more related to polytheism than monotheism. In addition, look up anthropology journals (especially cultural anthropology), here are some other journals that deal with religion/spirituality in academia: International Journal of Philosophy and Religion Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion Journal of the American Academy of… [cont.]

A. Are you in college? If so, you can use your college library website to access this information. Go to the library homepage, click on databases, go to Academic Search Premier and type in your subject and then click on full text and peer review. You'll find great empirical journal articles through this website.

How can I measure the reliability and validity of an academic journal and the weighting that it holds?
Q. I am very aware that some journals are taken more seriously than others and that some journals carry more weight in the academic world. For example, I believe in Medicine 'The Lancet' is highly respected and articles that appear in there are taken to be reliable. How can I find out 'how good' a journal is? I am particularly interested in the journal 'Research on Social Work Practise'. How can I find out? Thankyou!
Asked by Ben R - Thu Jan 22 08:59:14 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Good journals are "peer reviewed" that means that other scientists look at articles to see if the science they describe is correct and if their experiments are repeatable. More famous journals aren't necessarily more correct, there fame just allows them to attract the most interesting articles (eg. a lot of medical scientists want their work published in "The Lancet" so they have a lot to choose from to see what goes in).

A. Hallett and Davis (as mentioned by Rio) also have a book called "Firing the Heather" which is a biography of McClung. You might also try the "Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature," which has short overviews of Canadian writers and provides excellent reference material. The academic journal, "Essays in Canadian Writing" would also be useful. I would also go out of the literary realm and check out journals in Canadian women's history as McClung's political involvement leaves more of a legacy than does her fiction.

MA degree getting published in academic journal?
Q. Some my PoliSci (International Relations- Security emphisis) have been wondering if MA degrees ever get published in academic journals. For sure it's uncommon but some of us have papers that are truly excellent in new areas of study, such as in implications of the current revisitation to privatized security.
