When does the academic year of 2010 start at Harvard University?
Q. In which month of the year 2010 does the academic year start at Harvard University? I believe its the same for all US universities but I'm not sure. It would be great if you know the month in which MIT starts as well.

A. Most if not all schools start their orientations in August and classes will most likely start in September. If you want to absolutely certain of a date, then look on the school's website. I checked Harvard's 08-09 calendar which should be fairly similar to this 10's

What types of academic limitations might I experience if I choose to become pregnant in medical school?
Q. If I were to decide to have my first child while I'm still in medical school would I be limited when it comes to the courses I could take? Would I not be able to participate in labs and such? And I know it would be tricky juggling everything, but I am very fortunate to have a huge support system. So right now I'm just mainly concerned about what types of academic limitations I might run into if I choose that route. Thank you!

A. There won't be any academic limitations due to your pregnancy. The only problem you will experience is the amount of time you miss during and after the birth of your child and where you are in school at that time. The only period of time in medical school that isn't tightly controlled is the fourth year, when students are doing their elective rotations. In the 4th year, it's not uncommon for students to sit idle for a few weeks due to scheduling problems, so taking time off for a delivery can be accommodated. During the third year, your school may be able to accommodate you by adjusting your schedule to complete a Core Rotation during your 4th year. Any time during the first and second years would be problematic. Even a week's… [cont.]

What is a good background for an academic challange school webpage?
Q. I am in charge of making a webpage on our school site about academic challange. In case you don't know what academic challange is it's just a school club where we go to a meet and answer questions and stuff.

A. My suggestion would be formulas, calculations, text and pictures in a decoupage. How about "The Thinker"? You could show him from several angles. It could also just be question marks or a single question mark formed by a cloud. Good Luck.

What are the best predictors of academic performance? Are they related to high stakes assessments?
Q. Which variables are the best predictors of academic achievement, for K-12 education? Are any of the variables related to NCLB stratification criteria? I am using multiple linear regression to answer this question, but feel the logic is flawed. My concern is that different school settings will reveal different drivers for scale scores, and that different grade levels, different groups of learners, and different instuctional settings will each work to undermine the algorithm's accuracy in predicting next year's scores with this year's data, and so forth. Interestingly, none of my dummy-coded NCLB variables enter the equation. I am explaining between 80 - 99.9% of the variance for each grade level at each school site for 3 scale… [cont.]

How important is school Project Work as compared to academic performances?
Q. Our schools and teachers have been stressing on getting good grades so as to enter into a college of our choice. But do you feel that school project work should be held the same weightage as our academic records when it comes to preparing for college? For one thing, school project work focuses on communication & working cohesively as a grp, which are essential for our future career. Do share with me your views ad thoughts on this topic. Thanks ^^

A. Interesting question. My view is that they are both important to your future career. You will need to demonstrate that you can gather, assimilate and retain information quickly, accurately and independently. This is akin to studying a given subject and then demonstrating your individual knowledge on a test. You will also be required to work in group settings and contribute to the successful completion of a project. Others in your group(s) will always be relying on your individual knowledge and skills, as well as your ability to work in a team setting. Apply yourself equally to both and you'll do just fine!

Q. Why does the academic left consider many social fields of study as scientific? It would really be nice if you could somehow tie in the Science Wars (early 90's) and maybe some philosophers/historians of science.
Asked by SyaoranX - Tue Jun 2 01:41:15 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well anyone who uses a phrase like "the academic left," clearly has a limited understanding of science and education to begin with, so I don't feel the need to go into too much detail. The reason these things are considered "scientific," is because of the processes involved. When the world is viewed in an objective empirical way, and evidence is used to back claims that is scientific regardless of the discipline it is being applied to. In fact, when the term "science," is used correctly it is really a catch all term for an understanding of existence based on empirical evidence, it is only those people who truly misunderstand it who attempt to define it in the narrow terms you are implying in your question.

A. As far as the plays' actual text goes, either the Oxford or the Arden. The main difference is in the supplementary materials. I recommend the Arden if you are really into textual analysis, cross-referencing within and between plays, etymology and heavy-duty study. It also has massive introductory essays, etc. I consider this more of a reference edition as the amount of notes take over sometimes 2/3 of the page and make the play not very readable. I recommend the Oxford if you are looking for more thematic and historical notes that will help you better understand the words and perhaps outdated social cues in the text. The Folger is okay, but I think it is geared more to the average high school student. Each set of facing pages has a… [cont.]

You are all trying to win, hopefully, so this is your common goal. If everyone on the team doesn't cooperate, then no one will be in sync, your plan won't work, and you will lose the game. In relation to communication, everyone on the team has to cooperate and this takes verbal and nonverbal expression of common goals, or communicating verbally and non verbally. Everyone on the team has to be on the same page and this cannot be accomplished unless there is a great deal of communication between every player on the team.
